Marion's CCTE Blog

Thursday, October 20, 2005

Since my last posting, I have been able to make contact with Toni Cindrich, the Treasurer and Tech person of West Siders for Responsible Development. She is relieved that some help is on the way. Toni explained that she's been operating as a "one man band" and it's become overwhelming to keep up with emails and questions about the growing organization.

Toni expressed interest in upgrading from their blog to a
website. In response to Ulises' suggestion, I proposed creating a wiki instead. I explained that a wiki would allow other members of West Siders to contribute updates, post articles, make relevant announcements, etc. This would, not only foster the ongoing participation of members and an online community, but would also relieve Toni of some of the burden she's been feeling by allowing others to keep information up-to-date.

I created a shell of this wiki and I'm awaiting her response.
In light of the fact that most of their active members are older folks who don't have internet access (according to the VP I spoke with), enhancing the organization's web presence in this way could help attract younger group of people who may not be aware of the organization or Extell's development plan. Before I proceed, though, I want to make sure she's comfortable with this type of format.

  • Hi Marion,

I dug up some links on prior resident activism in the neighborhood. The two I remember were:

    1) The protest and boycott of the CVS (which opened across the street from duanne reade and caddycorner from rite-aid):
    covered in the columbia spectator

    2) The protest against the KFC opening across the street from Straus Park:
    la times

Also mentioned in the ny review of books, but unfotunately, their original protest site is no longer active.. :-(

There is also this organization, The friends of Straus Park who may be able to connect you with the people that can help you mobilize.

This is a great neighborhood and there are plenty of folks who would hate to see it change for the worse.

  • Marion, since you note that the West Siders are mostly elderly advocates, do you think that you can have any success helping them get their message out to a larger audience? I think that you've put a nice structure together for the Wiki and should probably move ahead with it as a corollary to their project.

The West Side Stadium fiasco opened many New Yorkers' eyes to the greed of developers. You might want to contact some other community groups supporting rational development. Hopefully you can tap a larger, younger audience who can support the work the West Siders are already doing. For example, you might be able to cross-promote with some of the groups opposing Ratner's plans for the Brooklyn train yards.

  • Thanks Jonah! Those are great resources. I'll definitely add links to those articles on the wiki I'm developing for the organization. I'll also get in touch with the Friends of Straus Park to see if they want to help join the fight against Extell.

Matt- I am hoping that enhancing West Siders' online presence will help recruit the support of a broader group of people. I have found a couple of community groups (one with the help of Jonah) that may wish to join the fight or at least help get the word out.
